Springtime in Central PA has Officially Arrived

March 20, 2010

Dear Blog, I’ve been neglecting you. I’m sorry. But with days like today can you blame me?

Today we were actually able to enjoy this amazing weather and do something that I’ve been wanting to do for almost two years now: Go back and visit Lauxmont Farms, the place where we got married.

Our wedding day at Lauxmont Farms.

Lauxmont has multiple wedding sites overlooking the Susquehanna River in Wrightsville, PA with absolutely amazing views. On a day like today, there’s no place I’d rather be. There are also parks, restaurants and wineries that have similar views in the area. So we packed a blanket and a book and figured we would make our way over to Sam Lewis State Park after a nostalgic swing by our old wedding location.

On the way over to Lauxmont we noticed signs for the Susquehanna Overlook and decided we would check that out before heading to the park. If you have never driven up in this area, you have to. You simply have to. York County has some pretty amazing views, but nothing tops this. I may be biased, but I dare you to take a look for yourself.

Lauxmont has something like 6 wedding sites within the farm. Our wedding was held at the Rotunda, a large circular building that’s walls are covered in floor to ceiling glass doors so that no matter where you are inside you can see the amazing view outside. The Rotunda was prepping for an event tonight so we didn’t get out. Just drove up, breathed in a big nostalgic sigh, and drove off again.

Our next stop was the Susquehanna Overlook at the Highpoint Heritage Trail. I can’t believe we had never been here before, it’s only a couple of minutes from Lauxmont. It’s located on one of, if not the, highest point in Wrightsville. It’s a half a mile gravel path incline around to the top, which has breathtaking views of all of Central PA. You could even see Three Mile Island from the top! As well as the Rt 30 bridge, the 462 bridge, all of Lauxmont farms, southern Lancaster County, southern York County and of course a huge span of the Susquehanna. There were quite a few boats out today!

I couldn’t believe it wasn’t more crowded. There were people there when got there but then we had the place to ourselves for a good 45 minutes. Then an adorable family with two young children ventured up with their kites. It was a picture perfect scene with the mom and dad helping the kids control their kites – it was windy up there!

We never made it over to Sam Lewis State Park. It was simply too beautiful at the Highpoint Heritage Trail. Anyone know of any other similar great views in Wrightsville? Or have any amazing pictures you want to share?

I got married at Lauxmont, but at the Sunken Gardens location. It was gorgeous. There is a good little restaurant in Wrightsville called John Wright. The views are pretty good from their little park next to the restaurant. They have an awesome, newly renovated, seating area that overlooks the river. It’s quite beautiful.

There is one more hidden gem. If you drive up cool creek road, towards Eastern HS, you can make a left hand turn at the top of the hill. Follow the signs to “Moondancer Winery”. The winery has pretty good views of the river and you can enjoys some tasty drinks while you are there.

        Cheers!

Oh the Sunken Gardens location is beautiful! I love that it’s just up the road but has a completely different view of the Susquehanna. Especially with the bridge in the background – such a neat photo op!

I’ve been to both the John Wright and Moondancer and absolutely love the views. Especially Moondancer – the view makes me very nostalgic for our wedding day.

As a girl my Foster Dad milked cows on Lauxmont Farms when we lived in Wrightsville before moving to East Prospect PA. I love the area to this very day. I can remember playing on the farm. Its a shame most of it was torn down. People don’t know how to leave well enough alone.
